Land's End to John O'Groats PDF Print E-mail

We get a regular group of nutcases that return year after year to do this event, and each year we welcome new nutcases to the event.

At the end of June each year a group of minis, from all over the country leave Barnstaple for the start of the annual Land's End to John O’Groats mini run.

Lejog is the first of the NDMR major fund raising events and each of the minis do a round trip of about 2000 miles. Using mainly A & B roads with 2 short sections of motorway they cross some of the country's best countryside. They leave Barnstaple on Monday and are in John O’Groats by Friday lunch time. They do about 250 miles a day between camp sites and stop every morning at a supermarket for breakfast, they even know where the toilets are en route. The event is not a race or a rally, it is just a small group of mini nuts doing what they enjoy most; driving their minis and knowing that they can help raise a great deal of money makes it even more fun.

This years Lejog June 22nd to June 27th 2009

So you want to know about Lejog, well this is it.

If you have done it before then you know what to expect, if you haven’t then here’s a few bits about it. But first there is the bit about doing it dressed as a hippy ok now you can read the rest.

Two years ago we have decided to make a few changes to the event. The first is to make the Tuesday night a Travel Lodge stop, instead of camping. It did break up the journey and gave us a rest from putting up the tents and it did work well but it does make for a longer day. The event is neither a race nor any kind of time trial, we except everyone to follow the Highway code and we do have run numbers. We won’t put you into little groups, we all leave Lands End together and we try to arrive at John O’Groats together.

The route will not change because after 8 years we feel we have at last got it right and it will take us across some of the best scenery in the country. The event will always be a challenge but we also hope it will be a sort of driving holiday. We do about 250 miles a day, mainly on A&B roads but we do have a couple of motorway sections.

Our campsites are nice, well tried and close to a pub, which sells food or a take away, if you do not want to cook. We stop for breakfast every morning at a supermarket and there is always time in the evening to sit and chat. The event is limited to about 20 minis and we do have a back up vehicle. The idea is we try and travel in convoy whenever possible between Lands End and John O’Groats, except on motorways and we try to do it as a team, which sometimes means helping each other. Mind you we also get lost but that’s part of the fun and adventure. The event is all about having fun but it does give you a great sense of achievement. We do have time for short stops and a bit of time to explore and take pictures, without putting to much pressure on the run

As far as sponsorship is concerned all we ask is that you raise a minimum of £300 but it is a 50/50 event, with half the money going to the Children’s Hospice SW and the other half going to your own chosen charity, if you do not do it solely for the CHSW. We cannot send out the sponsorship forms until you have booked in.

The cost of the event is £200 per car this covers the camping etc and the door plaques which are vinyl. It also covers our 5 million public liability insurance and a great deal of other bits and pieces.

You will need 2 drivers just in case and a CB Radio is recommended because it is a lot more fun and it lets you here what people are saying about you. We do not allow any illegal horns on any of our events, we do not mind air horns but not two tone or any emergency sirens.

So far we have 20 cars which have said they would like to do this year Lejog and I have started to get more e-mails from mini owners wanting to know more about the event. So please do not hold onto the booking forms to long.
