No, I voted for one Classic and "two or more" new. One of those works for a living as my better half uses it in her job as a driving instructor.

Glad we're not on our own.

You might have seen the driving school car on the Monday of the Grand Tour - it's electric blue so he's called Sparky. Rita wasn't convinced that she made the right decision taking him along, but at least that gave me a chance to drive RealMini - my first day driving in 7 Grand Tours.

I must admit that the thought of being a driving instructor doesn't do much for me either. You love your car, but you let people who can't drive loose in it. The learners love it though - lots more street cred than things like Micras, Corsas and Focuses.

I'm sure I would have seen the Binis, having one means you take more notice of them. Our mate Dave took his open top Bini known as Suzy and he got a few nasty comments. I think people forget that the original design for the Bini was Rovers'. Had they pulled their fingers outta their rses it would have been Rover and everyone would have been happy!!

I had to learn to drive in a clio, bluegh!!!

The Grand Tour is fab! We seem to be preferring the road runs rather than sit in field shows. Headed up to Yorkshire in May for the Roller Coaster Tour. That was brilliant too. Took over Scarborough see front and bemused a large number of people. No where near the feel good factor to the NDGT though.

Hello, we got a classic & new mini as well, or as we call them Little Mini & BIG Mini.

This was our third run, first two in the little one, this year in the big one, classic was having it's rust treated!  Had a few nasty comments thrown at us, German jibes & nazi salutes, but who cares!! Looking forward to next year, but in the classic this time

Yeah little mini and big mini works for us, although we name all our motors! Sad eh?

We were wondering if you have runs in Wales ADE ?

As a club we are a little adventurous, hoping to go to Paris for New year run, but after Yorkshire and Devon we fancy branching out a bit further....

Hi Missymummy ............I think! we all give our Minis names
Our Paul Smith is called Gromit#2 as he/she is the second Mini we have owned together.

Gromit#1 went to a Royal Marine & I would love to know if he/she is still about, because, we still have photos of he/she, undergoing a baremetal respray...that we could pass on.

Sylvia's Mini is called Dizzy & Terrys is Nessy.

Maybe you should start a thread (What is your Mini called & Why?) or (Why are some Mini's Male & some female?)

My pearly white mini is called Ms Benoa or street name is Missy B! Hubbys is called Nigel, which is gay because it has all the spare parts from my crashed Cooper Felicity. The Bini is known as Amazon and the lil' cabriolet that we are restoring is only known as Cabbie...

Good idea for new link though!!

The only reason the new Mini went on the Grand Tour was because he was down in Devon to give the kids at the hospice a go at driving on the Saturday, but Rita really wasn't happy taking him on the run. For us it's a "real" Mini run so our real Mini, which has been every year since 1999, will always be there.

ADE90J, I remember chatting to you at Hartland Quay when you were waving your sign about your real Mini being in the bodyshop.

The names of our Minis:

RealMini - because he's a real Mini.

and the new Minis:

LazyBones - because he spends most of his time dozing in the garage while Sparky's out earning a living.

Sparky - current driving school car, because he's Electric Blue.

Bumble - because he's going to be yellow and black. Arrives next month as new driving school car. He's going to be really noisy as he's a diesel but hopefully he's going to save us money as Sparky only gets 20mpg when he's out working.

Missymummy - Cardiff MC hold an event called Cardiff Bay Day every year in support of a local children's hospice. Usually get 150-200 minis & it's the only time you are allowed to drive across the Cardiff barrage. Nowhere near as good as the NDGT, but it's getting better everyyear.

LazyBones - that was us, at least it stopped people spitting at us!! Our friends with us weren't to happy as their mini has picked up the award for best new Mini on the L2B for the last 2 years ( they also own a classic). Ours is just the work horse.

Missymummy - Paris is a great run. Done Tower To Tower for the 2 years that it ran. South Wales to Blackpool to Paris in one weekend was pushing it abit. The French seemed to love the minis

Thanks ADE, will mention it to the rest of the Safmini crew. The Paris trip is for the New Years parades. We were going to do the London one but been put off by a comment made by someone that we were only allowed to take 60's minis because their club considered the event their own, having done it for 3 years.

We were invited to Paris so cock-a-snook at the London one.

Lets face it, we all have the same passion, why do some clubs have to be so bitchy? We are all in it together.

Who are they trying to kid? I've done the run the last two years with Southern MOC and as far as I know the only club to have done 3 is the one in the picture, local to Saf, taken in 2004. Not many 60s Minis there, particularly the "big Mini" in the second row!

SMOC took 3 new Mins in 2004, but only had real ones in 2005. Not sure if they are going to do 2006 as they too have had an invite from Paris and are looking at which one they do - or whether to send cars to both.

The French seemed to love the minis

At least once a year we do a club run to France, and as you say the French love the Minis.

When we get split up we normally keep going round a roundabout until we've got the whole convoy back together and then head for an exit. The French can't get anywhere near their roundabout unless we let them in, but they seem to love it. Imagine the abuse you'd get if you tried doing the same here!

BTW missysmummy - if you do London you will find that the Mini clubs will be spread through the procession so you won't see any of the others unless you make a point of having a walk around before the start.

I'm happy to say that it wasnt the SMOC that passed comment, I believe it was our neighbours in Essex. Our events co-ordinator got a snooty email saying they prefer us to only bring 60s minis.

However, I think we may try to send some to each as you say.

Terry, I would never diss a new mini, I have one and love her muchly. Hope the photos and donations have arrived safely with you by now????

ADE, where can I source information about the Cardiff Bay Day? No website for  Cardiff MOC.......thanks

We don't care what type of mini you drive as long as you are nice people. I have often said the Gt is about the CHSW, then it is about the people taking part, sorry the minis come last.

The only problem is once you started supporting something so local  like a children's hospice or any hospice you can find it hard to stop. But it does give you a great sence of purpose and gives you an excuse to do something stupid every so often.

it is amazing fun - but really hard work!! I did it last year - dressed as a deranged green nessie of all things.

The majority of road users were great. They would switch off their engines, chat, laugh, look bemused... all the usual. Then you got the other kind. who whinged and moaned and whined and generally got abusive ... to a green nessie thing. (what muppets!)

I got myself a pet local biker to stick with so i wouldn't get lost, but without doubt the most fun has got to be when that last has driven by, (and the ambulance, safety truck and the rest of the back up convoy), and you leap onto your bike and "filter" all the way to the front again! The difference to the normal filter being that all of these drivers are looking out for you, making room for you and leaving gaps for you instead of the usual "hugging the white line to stop you getting past" type driver!

it is amazing. also - you get to the toilets waaaaaay before everyone else assuming you made it to the front of the queue......

the only thing i found quite worrying was coming out of lee abbey. it is a very tiny road, with moss down the middle, and very steep hills. i don't get a lot of practice with steep hills, what with living in Kent - a very flat county - and i don't like moss.

i do like 's though

I've helped marshall a few cycle races over the years, always enjoyed it.
Being a biker, you seem to give them more respect & leave them plenty of space on the GT. Got annoyed a few times when you could see Minis drifting out to the white line when the bikes where approaching. Should make everyone ride a motorbike for a year, it'll make the roads safer!!!

Living in Wales I'm pretty used to narrow steep roads
Also ride an Yamaha Xt600 now, so moss won't be much of a problem. Got myself a slow sensible bike now

Started buying PartyRings again. Wonder who's fault?

definitely agree with that one!! dozy muppets might have a bit of respect for other road users then instead getting in their metal box and looking no further than the end of their bonnet - assuming they can even see that far!! "Sorry mate i didn't see you" has got to be one of the most annoying and stupidly pointless utterings ever!!

Apart from everything else - as much as i love my mini, and love driving - NOTHING beats riding a motorbike on some wicked twisty's on a sunny day!!
