Sometimes l think is this not the right forum to talk about Breast Cancer and am I doing the right thing.
Cry Wolf
I have just received this from a new friend,
I am now the biggest ambassador for telling women and men to insist on a proper diagnosis. Interestingly enough my friend who is a local GP has had a couple of complaints from consultants from **** for "inappropriate referrals", because he has referred young woman with similar symptoms and because they have not been malignant they have deemed his referrals inappropriate. He says the bottom line is money.
If you are lucky and your GP guesses the wrong diagnosis and sends you to the consultant all you will be is an inappropriate referral but you will be a statistic some where.
If you are unlucky and your GP guesses the wrong diagnosis and sends you home all you will be is unlucky.
There are no statistics for the unlucky ones and no one knows how often this happens.
I wonder what the consultant would say if he had a daughter that was unlucky because someone had guessed wrong. This is what Cry Wolf is all about
* Next year about 45,000 women will get breast cancer and thank god their survival rate is growing every day. * Next year 1 in 2000 (or so they say) of those women will be under 30 and their survival rate is not as good as it should be. * Next year 1 in 200 women under the age of 40 will get breast cancer.
EARLY DETECTION GIVES YOU THE BEST CHANCE OF SURVIVAL. MAKE NO MISTAKE BREAST CANCER FOR WOMAN UNDER 30 IS VERY RARE. YOU MAY NEVER MEET OR SEE ANYONE UNDER THE AGE OF 30 WITH BREAST CANCER.
* But if you get Breast Cancer under 30 the chances are you will have an aggressive type of cancer. * It won't wait for you to see your local GP. * It couldn't give a damn if your GP said "it's nothing". * It won't care how long it takes for you to get classed as a non urgent referral. * It might even smile to itself when your consultant says "that one can wait till next week". * It knows for every day you wait it can get a bigger hold on you. * It will go from your breast to your lymph nodes then to your bones or where ever else it wants because no one will stop it. * No one will know you have it and what's worse no one will believe you have it.
Breast Cancer still kills more women than any other disease and after all these years the first examination for it, is still done by feeling a lump and guessing. Three different GP's told Leigh she had nothing to worry about, even the family GP admitted that she would have said the same. They all GUESSED wrong!
Then when Leigh did get to see a consultant he examined her and said she has breast cancer in both breasts and they have to come off, but he even got it wrong because she only had it in one breast.
Lets get rid of the guess work. Lets try and make it easier for every woman or man, no matter what age, to get checked out properly and with a mammogram or an ultrasound.
Lets make it a right for every woman, no matter what age, to walk away from their biggest killer knowing their life has not been decided by guess work. Lets try and make it a right for every woman to have access to a mammogram at any time in her life, no matter what the cost and without having to wait 3 months because if she does have cancer it won't wait. That's what CRY WOLF is about.

Me thinks maybe the ****** learnt the hard way from Leighs' case and sends people off to get checked just in case. We all learned a lesson from Leigh, I went and had to spend a day at St. Georges in Tooting and left having had a biopsy on my left breast, There were 20 of us (older than Leigh and Nicola) and it was unnerving being the only one that did not go home after early tests that day.
I had to wait a week to find out if I had a problem but was given the all clear by phone the afternoon before my appointment. I cannot begin to imagine how anyone must feel to get the wrong news. I was nearly disappointed not to have to go back as I felt so safe in their hands. I will happily support your cause as I do privately.

Put it on the front page - not just here, of every newspaper in the land. This sort of thing needs publicity, because someone might get the strength of character to be insistent at their GP's Surgery from being aware of other women's action, and that action might just save their life.

I guess that shows where our minds are, as we all seemed to assume it would be rude..... I know it's got to be funny, as I've been in stitches at your stories before

just had an idea for the tail-if you can't get pink fabric Penny you could do normal 'Wolfy' colour with a pink bow tied round the end for the breast cancer symbol?
Ok here goes-a quite funny story about a green shield stamp! Some 20 years ago I used to sell Ann Summers party plan. I would be reliant on my hostess offering her guests plenty of wine and alcohol to loosen them up. One party an elderly lady, loud but full of character told us this story.
She had been for a hospital appointment and the specialist said he needed to examine her "down below ". He left her a short time to prepare herself and she decided she would like to give herself a quick wipe...... She rummaged down the depths of her handbag and found an old tissue . She did the necessary and then waited for his return.
After the examination he thanked her and told her it was the first time he'd been given one of these. On the end of his finger he had a Green Shield stamp that must have got caught up in her tissue! True story..... I still chuckle at it.

How about a 'cry wolf mini bra party' perhaps something like the moonwalks that are already organised, but everyone in the minis, man woman and child wear a bra on the outside of their clothes. They could be pink, tiger, sporty or any other type..

When those tails became trendy I was working as a veterinary nurse and I went one better than the Tiger tails. A litter of 7 five day old Jack Russell pups were brought in to have their dew claws removed and their tails docked. I don't dwell on that too much as anesthetic is not used. Anyway I kept the tail ends and threaded them on a big safety pin and wore them on my crombie! I felt like the bees' knees and they were greatly admired by my friends. Nowadays with my views on animal welfare I can't believe I did it but they'd have gone in the bin anyway. I think it was the blood remains that made them look good!

Rita, you'll have to explain to the "kids" on here what a "Crombie" is. Never had one myself, I was on the hairy side of the divide in those days - paisley shirt, 26" bottom trousers and a Great Coat (& hair past my shoulders - I'd be happy with any hair nowadays!). And, I'm ashamed to say, the odd illegal substance. I did have a tiger tail on my first mini though - a 1963 850 super de luxe.
A crombie is a type of coat still similar style available nowadays. Mine was navy, single breasted with a false top pocket where I pinned my tails. I had it for years. I wonder if some of you had a Parker instead. I bet OB had one when riding her scooter!

Oh I did! I had my name in gold on the side-panels and an upright sparewheel carrier with a bit of fur (fake I might add) wrapped around the wheel as a back- rest for my pillion passengers

Sounds good Carol. I always wanted the freedom of two wheels, but parents wern't keen - then two schoolmates went & had a crash on their Bonneville a week before my sixteenth birthday, so it was a definite NO.

My parents said that if I wanted one I had to save up for it Much to their amazement I did and then I had them over a barrel - they did insist I had to have training tho - it was obviously before the days of CBT. I took myself off to Margate Deafschool where I underwent RAC/ACU training. I probably still have the certificate somewhere. After I completed the training I was actually offered a job as an RAC patrol officer
Bonkers I always do what my rice crispies tell me.

I dunno, geography is not my good point !
Everyone deserves to live 'that bit longer' if it is possible to..............
I (we here) also agree to the campaign..... Terry may know that we used to raise lots for breast cancer care. In fact we still get the monthly newsletters, and have some bcc collection pots somewhere. Also having been to the BCC house / offices/ in London, we have some contact details, etc.... Yes, most definately, go for this BIG TIME...........
SILLY MINI W.END RAISES FUNDS FOR C.H.S.W. too. Similar to L.G.T. much smaller, just as much fun tho'. (jester) OR this one.... http://www.sillyminis.com (jester)
Thank you for your support but we are not interest in raising loads of dosh, that we save for the CHSW. All we are going to try and do is make people aware of the things that are wrong with Breast Cancer diagnosis. This is a campaign and not an appeal there are already lots of them about. We need as much support as possible, we are going to have a go at every consultant that uses the word inappropriate referrals. We are going to make sure every woman gets a proper diagnosis and to make sure her life is not decided on a guess.

Trust Tracey to lower the tone - you wouldn't catch me doing such a thing!
Great effort everyone. I'd like to be at one of the runs on Sunday, but a 360 mile round trip to Bideford or a 250 mile round trip to Planet Thanet is a bit much with a "school day" the next day. Sorry, would love to be with you, and anyway "she who must be obeyaed" has plans for me (not that sort of plan Tracey - unfortunately!).
