Just when i thought my problems ended with Mabel along comes Foxy He has a rather disturbing knocking sound which after some research appears to be a common problem, phoned Westerly and they are aware of the problem and he's booked in on Friday. What annoys me is not so much the problem its the fact that the dealer i bought him from must have been aware of it (bought from Scotthall Southampton not Westerly btw) as its so obvious that even i noticed!!

oops busted!!! funny you should say that coz it was only after i put the bears in him that this problem started......damn those voices!!!
I think you should phone and complain to the dealership where you bought him I most certainly would, it's difficult when you buy privately but a dealership should at least give you some sort of guarantee

OB's right (don't tell her though! ) you've only just had the car so they should do something about it if your not happy with the answer they give you speak to MINI customer services after all it may be a used car but it was sold by one of their franchised dealers....

Too late Mark - I've read it - but yes I know I'm right, well at least about this. Tracy just hasn't had the car long, they should sort it not her.
going to wait and see what Westerly say before I kick off! Scotthall should have spotted it as it happens when the car is cold. The knocking sounds like it's coming from the steering column.

Sounds like a wise move. It might turn out to be not much of a problem anyway. If the previous owner hadn't noticed it or hadn't got it fixed Scotthall wouldn't necessarily know about it when they did their checks before they sold him so, depending on what it is, I wouldn't be too hard on them either.
You are probably going to be using Westerly for a few years and will want to keep on good terms with them. If it's a problem that needs fixing I would guess they would do it quite happily under warranty so I wouldn't get too excited yet.
We totally fell out with the dealer that we bought LazyBones, Sparky and Bumble from and won't go there any more. Thankfully there is another one that is actually more convenient for us to get to that we get on very well with, but that probably wouldn't be such an easy option for you.
thanks Debbie the guy I spoke to was really nice so should be ok. What I'm wondering now though is what to do when warranty runs out- can I extend it and is it worth the money? Anyone know?
When I bought Bumble from Cooper Cobham I kept my previous car Sparky an electric blue Cooper who did 2 Lejogs. I used him for "best" and consequently we did not use Andrew's car hence his name Lazybones. Having 3 BMW minis and a real mini seemed a bit OTT so I reluctantly sold him back to Cooper Cobham for a fair price of £10,000.
I owed some money on my BMW finance so I paid that off and awaited the balance of just over £4,000. That was duly sent and I paid it in BUT it bounced! BMW had put a stop to it as there had been discussion about a couple of marks on the car which were found when they removed some stripes I had left on. I don't often get annoyed but a deal had been struck and worse still no one had the decency to ring me and explain.
I moved immediately from there as just prior to that I had had to pay £1,000 for a new clutch at 17,000 miles as they did not deem it to be warranty but that's another story.
What I'm wondering now though is what to do when warranty runs out- can I extend it and is it worth the money? Anyone know?
When both LazyBones and Bumble ran out of warranty at 3 years old we were offered an extension warranty. I can't remember exactly but think it was something like £500 for the 4th year. We decided it was too much and ignored the letters.
In the 3¼ years since Bones's warranty expired the only things that I have had to pay for was about a month ago when the coolant expansion bottle split and I noticed that one of the heated mirrors wasn't heating. The total bill was £226.
I'm not sure if they would give you the option of extending the warranty but would guess that as Foxy will be 7 years old by then it might be quite pricey.
Like any insurance you have weigh up the pros and cons of whether you'd rather commit to paying a fixed fee come what may or take the risk.
I think as the other halfs brother in law is a mechanic and owns a garage I might be better off just putting money aside in case it's needed instead of a warranty.
TLC is a maintenance package which gives you 3 services in the first 5 years, plus a brake fluid change at 2 years. It can be extended to a total of 5 services in the first 8 years plus another brake fluid change.
The extension costs £300 but it has to be bought before any servicing is done after the original deal has run out. I would imagine that Foxy must have been serviced since his 5th birthday so guess that it'll be too late to do now. I would have thought that Scotthall would have told you if he was covered but it might be worth checking with Westerly. What you need to ask is if he's covered by TLC XL, and if he isn't if it's too late to do.
there are a couple of tlc vouchers in with the documents but they expire 5 years after purchase so I'm guessing there is no tlc xl or they'd be there too.
if you get an extended warranty check what it covers as some are not worth the paper they are printed on. the dealer where i work do extended warrantys but we dont tell the customer about the cheapest one as its really not worth it, we'll give them the brochures but i wouldnt reccomend it. also they can quite happily turn round and refuse to pay for work done because they dont deem it to be covered, door locks are a good one as the warrany people say its a wear n tear thing but i wouldnt. i think the clutch one on rita's car was refused maybe because it was used as a learner car or had evidence of clutch slip (i had a similar one where i work, you can see if the clutch has been slipped where someone drives with their foot lightly on the clutch pedal - not saying thats what rita does )
i would see what your dealer says, then speak to the selling dealer and explain what westerly(?) said. they should honour the repair, unfortunately some faults dont get noticed on the PDI checks/appraisals when the car gets bought in and sold, which is what the warranty is for. I think you get something like 12 months warranty on a used MINI, i dont know because i work for Toyota

Thanks Charlie-yep it is a years warranty, i'm not forseeing any problems as i explained to westerly that it was bought at a different dealers and they said fine, and also that this seems to be a common fault (according to a LOT of people on the MINI2 forums!) which even the guy at Westerly sorta admitted. Will let you know what happens
if its a common problem then they normally are willing to sort it out, although they dont like to admit to how common the problem really is.

well westerly say that scothall should never have let the car go like it is. There's a prob in upper steering and lower universal joint is half siezed. They've ordered parts and will be fixed next Thursday .
nice to know that they're doing their job properly at westerly

Heh heh the salesperson from Scotthall has just texted me to say sorry for forgetting to post me my tax disc holder..i think that will be the least of her worries come Monday morning
So they don't have a great reputation then Richard?
Have to say Westerly have been great so far, glad they are my local dealer
there seems to be quite a few bmw/mini dealers in the south east that are not as good as they should be

that's what's strange- didn't notice on test or on drive home, only few days ago I noticed it, does make me wonder if they just greased it at Scotthall, or am I being paranoid now.........?
Still no tax disc holder.... strange that lol. Had to cancel Thursday as i ve been off work but he's going in on Monday, they are fitting the parts and also checking power steering to see if its normal noisy or broken noisy, and also looking at the alarming kangaroo impression he does when starting from cold. Westerly have been great so far lets hope it continues!!

Well took him to westerly this morning, bloke turned up at work midday to say that after taking the steering column to bits and going to fit the part they realised that the wrong bit had been ordered (actually right bit ordered but wrong bit in box!) So as they didnt have an automatic to lend me they had to put him all back together again-oops! now going back Thursday (again!) They are so nice that i dont have the heart to be angry with them lol. Not their fault though if stupid people cant put the right part in the right box!
Hopefully!! He's looking very smart with his new bonnet stripes on and i have my ndmr windscreen sticker coming from Minipirate next week, they are doing me one in the same writing (font) as Mabels but on a black background Will have to take a pic over xmas
glad its getting sorted (almost). and its really frustrating when the wrong bit is in the box, bet they were bricking it when they found out - didnt want to incur the wrath of tracey!
