Could try a back-flush (connect a hosepipe to the bottom of the radiator, let it circulate and come out of the bottom hose, easiest if the thermostat is removed first, but remember to put it back in!). Sometimes when doing a flush from top to bottom of the radiator (the way the water normally goes) can move rusty rubbish into the radiator where it blocks it up, and bits of it keep coming out for ages.

Another alternative I've heard of is to try filling the system with distilled water, add a pint or so of white vinegar and run the engine at fast idle til it's been warm for a short while - this is meant to descale the insides of the engine (might even be able to use a kettle descaler tablet?) and might shift the last of the rusty rubbish.

I've also heard of dropping a Jeyes Parazone toilet cleaning tablet in the radiator and running the engine for a bit...

The heater could be full of rubbish, but if it's nice and hot, then it might not be.

However, it wouldn't take long to take the heater feed hoses off and just flush those through both ways. It could be that during previous flushing attempts, all of the rubbish ended up being pushed into the heater matrix to add to what was already there...

when you refill it, use a decent coolant/antifreeze. using distilled water instead of tapwater is actually better as its pure. my mini likes the mineral water you get in posh glass bottles.

Problem with mineral water is that - wait for it - it contains minerals...

OK, it's more "pure" than tap water in that it's not full of chlorine etc, but those dissolved solids aren't likely to do the insides any favours

i drink the water, then refill the bottle with distilled water. dont tell the mini, it might have a breakdown.
