It's bl**dy annoying - that's what it is...

Mrs Siddarz and I decided that it was time to decommission the Freelander, mostly to save fuel costs going to the 'van and back.

We were looking at using the scrappage scheme, even though I don't fully agree with it (the "environmental" reasons for it are - if you pardon the pun - rubbish), but found out that it was registered 17 days too late to be covered by the scheme because it's not a rolling 10 years...

And now, just as we're waiting for its replacement to be delivered, the "&^("%"^(%)*"&^)*&%)^$£"&*(%"&_(%)!"%)_*%&R$*&() beggars decide to extend the scheme so the Freelander would have been covered!

Upshot is, we've probably lost out on £500+.

Grr.

Anyway, as far as Minis go, I've only heard of the BMW garage that stuck one outside...

you're more likely to get a better deal on a car if you don't go for the scrappage scheme discount anyway (according to the sales teams at work), especially if you buy the car on finance.

That also depends on what car maker you're buying from...

The scrappage scheme should only apply to cars built in the UK.
What's the point of subsidising cars built in Spain, France, Korea etc >

The manufacturers who signed up are:

Allied Vehicles, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Citroen, Daihatsu, FIAT, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Isuzu, Iveco, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, London Taxis International, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, MG Motor, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Perodua, Peugeot, Porsche, Proton, Renault, Renault Trucks, Rolls Royce, SAAB, SEAT, SECMA UK, Skoda, Ssangyong, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Volvo.

The ones built in Britain are (I think):

Allied Vehicles, BMW (only the MINI, of course), Ford (though most built here are exported to Europe, with most of the UK-sold ones coming from Germany and Spain), Honda (Civics and others from Swindon), Jaguar, Land Rover, London Taxis International, MG Motor (3 cars a year?   ), Nissan (only some models), Peugeot (but not for long), Rolls Royce (are you really going to notice 2k?) and Vauxhall (for now).

Ultimately the profit from the vast majority of these goes abroad anyway, whether to Japan, India, Germany, France, Korea or America - but restricting the allowance to UK-built cars only would still be seen as protectionism and/or state aid, and the EU wouldn't let that happen unless we were France or Germany

Toyota also build vehicles in the UK. theres also 2 massive parts warehouses, and loads of factories making and supplying parts as well.

So the cash ultimately goes abroad still.

But at least with that list (and Toyota as well) there are UK staff being paid UK wages - but more importantly (for the government) those staff are paying taxes to cover the scrappage scheme
