Sad day. Paul O'Grady had to have Buster put to sleep yesterday. He retired him last week and Buster did look weak and tired but cancer was diagnosed and he was in pain. I have 4 nodding Busters and they now become more precious. I hope Heidi gets to meet him upstairs.

Oh how sad - it's not a show I watch so was unaware that Buster had even been retired, but having lost Jess so recently I can sympathise.

When someone is having to agonise about having their dog put to sleep or they had to make that hard decision about euthanasia I send them this poem. When Heidi had to be put to sleep we were going to Andrew's uncle funeral and I was not with her when she was put to sleep. She was drugged and not aware but I was. Girls, tissues at the ready. Ive sent it to Paul.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

what a lovely poem and sums up all those contradictory feelings when you know you have to take that decision but wish you didnt

At least i you will be there with your pet rather than it wander off and you never really know or go out one morning to find you pet a victim of a RTA which happened to one of our boys a few weeks ago

I suppose its something anyone with a pet may need to face oneday and hopefully that poem will help

sometimes my mind not only wanders it goes off on its own

Penny sorry to hear about one of your cats I assume. It's horrid to find them but it could be worse. They are often concussed when hit and often disappear and you never know where they are. Both you and Carol have had sad news.

The poem is lovely, Rita sent it to us when we lost Ben our German Shepherd, we were fortunate we didn't have to make the decision as he died at home, we keep his photo and lead on a table in the lounge, he will never be forgotten and we still can't face getting another dog.
