Well after my little jaunt to see you all over the weekend and having my first CB experience in my 'borrowed' Mini, I'd like to get one for Luna (my plan is to come and spend some more time down south with you nutcases) But where do I start? What do I need? It was all well and good getting Kevin to turn on and tune in the one in Charlie, but I don't have a clue!
Yes they are good that's where I got mine - although Terry got our CB for Jock - as being lead car on LEJOG we need to be heard and also to hear the other cars (it does help )
Had a bad day today - so a bit of retail therapy means there's a nice shiny CB setup on it's way to me!

Congratulations on your retail therapy, just so you know, technically speaking once you have your new shiney cb radio installed and connected up one of the first things you should do is check the Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) of the aerial by using a SWR meter. These are not expense if you can't find anyone to borrow from and there are very clear instructions on how to SWR your cb radio on the internet. This will not only protect your cb radio but it will give you greater range.

Speaking with the microphone somewhere close to your mouth helps too
LunaMini, if you can wait untill June I'll bring my SWR meter with me. It usually gets packed (shoved in the car) along with everything else for the run.
Of course with a gutter mount you need to make sure you get a really good earth with the car body (bang goes the paint in the gutter!! - good job it never holds water I guess).
Glad to see someone else is in for the slapping this year Siddarz.....

You all just ask for a good slapping you lot - you're just so unruly someone has to try (yes I did say try) to keep you all under control

You can run a ground lead back into the car with the coax, just make sure you clean off the paint (back to bare metal) where ever you connect it to.
If you dont want to damage the paintwork try fitting a small bracket to the rear bumper bracket (use a lamp bracket) as gives a great earth and if you have a rear fog light fitted you can run the lead out the same hole but you may just have to make it slightly larger. You can fit a large whip ariel then if you want.

the aerial gets its earth from the outside shield of the cable, and then earth through the CB unit.
its the same cable used on gutter mounts & magnetic mounts and you don't have to earth the magnetic mount
