I have a Toshiba too, a L300-29W. Not got loads of memory, but I don't download stuff. Got mine from M&S, £349. I use an "all in one" desktop most of the time, that I got from Argos too: 22 inch screen, so good for watching tv on catch-up etc.
Daughter has a Sony netbook - very good, but very expensive. But that's kids for you!
my sony vaio is rubbish! im on my way out with it - keyboard is being rubbish and mouse stopped working, gooogled it and many other people have the same thing. I am buying an ACER directly from them, all acers have been given very good reports in the which? magazine Joel has an Acer netbook i treated him to for his bday and im buy an ACER thingy - forgot what it was. We have just had Acer computers delivered to school recently they r very nice, seems acer are top of the game at the mo, but have a price tag to match. I have 3 laptops in the loft all work just old and slow, need somewhere to take them, anyone know of a good recycling laptops place???

I have a packard Bell and have to say I'm really impressed I had an acer before which was a good machine but the hinges broke on it and it was going to cost over £100 to get it repaired!!

basically get as much memory as you can - 4gb or up (RAM) as that determines how quickly the computer will work. It will probably have a ridiculous size hard drive (in multiple gigs) which you are unlikely to fill up so isn't as much of a concern. I always look for as much memory as possible. It's as the computer starts to age that lack of memory really slows you down.

i have a macbook. i used to have a compaq something or other with windows xp on, but i wouldnt go back to using windows out of choice now i have used something different.
select concorde 2 brighton then like 'heartbreaker' thats your only task for the day....do that then do whatever you want, easy! http://toursupport.grahamcoxon.co.uk/
I have a Dell and am very happy with it but I'm sure all of the makes have their good and bad points.
If you're going past 4GB you will need a 64 bit operating system to make use of it all as a 32 bit OS will just ignore anything more than about 3½GB. When I bought my laptop last year most seemed to have either 3 or 4GB. (This applies to Windows - I haven't a clue about Macs.)
If you are buying ANYTHING online and have a Nectar card check if you can get points on the purchase. If you sign onto the Nectar website first and then link to the retailer from there you can get points. Loads of companies are signed up - Amazon, PC World, Play, 7dayshop, and Sainsburys are ones I have used. Dell are on the list too but I forgot to check before I bought my laptop! In the scheme of things a few hundred points isn't worth a lot but every little helps.
my compaq hard drive crashed after 3 months of having it rubbish dont buy from pc world either no help at all...........our cousin is in the know and he said toshiba or acer hope that helps
Bought the daughter (age 16) a Dell laptop in April for her birthday and she's over the moon with it as it manages all the coursework, all the chatting she do'es to her mates and I player when she needs to catch up on tv programs ect. Prices are fair and you can dictate what you need.
I use a Compaq from PC world and had my hard drive lock one week after the warrenty ended but they put a new hard drive in free and it's never given me a problem since as on it now and it's over 3 years olddddddddddddddd####_=,745 Opps!
Thanks everyone for all your words of wisdom. I've ordered an Acer Aspire 5741A 320GB, with the Intel Core i3-330M processor, from Argos & collecting it tomorrow . So hopefully have it all set up & running in time for the boys next batch of homework

I recommend Toshiba laptops too - I've used them for years and they seem to go on and on! They are so robust and I have yet the break one and mine gets treated badly; taken from building site to building site and getting covered in dust and dirt.
