I mentioned on a previous thread that Andrew was poorly last week. On friday although tired he had an appetite and I cooked him Quorn with some rice. He had it the week before and was OK but after a few hours he was really ill. At that point we did not associate the connection but sunday he had more and within a couple of hours he was violently ill and has been up all night.
I googled "Quorn side effects" and it was scary. The manufacturer leads you to believe it is mushroom based but it is in fact a mould and the body can often tolerate it once but if you trickle feed you can get a reaction and Andrew did. He has an appointment for the doctors for his collapsing on thursday this morning but is living in the bathroom.
We cook with it a lot, for more than 10 years, without any side effects. I guess it's like all foods, different people have different intolerances. Hope Andrew feels better soon

Andrew managed to come out the bathroom and I took him to the Doctors and left him there to get on with it. He was sent for blood tests and an ECG which was normal. Doc thinks he had a blood pressure drop probably linked to the tablets he takes. Tummy calmer, all 3 packs of Quorn in the bin and plans to go into work tomorrow.
i'm a veggie and I live on Quorn! at least 3 tmes a week and never had any side effects...have heard that it can happen though, hope he feels better soon.
yep am a veggie of over 30 years and have had quorn many many many times, and never had any problems... in fact what you describe is me after meat.... hence I'm a veggie. However as with anything you can never tell but I hope Andrew is feeling better now.
How do you all cook yours? I gently fried it and then simmered it with some tomatoes and sauces for 15 minutes? Andrew still not well enough to go to work. Very windy in our house at the moment. Self generating nearly.
We chuck it in a pan with a little oil for a few minutes before adding a jar cooking sauce, or with onions, mushrooms, gravy with seasoning & heat in saucepan till all veg cooked to your liking.

well I also pan fry them (pieces or fillets) and then add in sauce etc such as a white wine with mushrooms, I also bake them, use quorn sausages and yorkshire puds, thin slice them and toss them into a salad...generally I use them whenever I would have used meat... quorn mince is good as an alternative in a spag bol

Some years back Nigel cooked a spag bol using quorn. As ever it was loaded with garlic and a multitude of other flavourings and yet, mysteriously, all of the flavour had completely vanished by the time we came to eat it. This lead us to conclude that Quorn is in fact death to flavour and should be avoided henceforth.
I did visit Quorn once while at Uni - a little village somewhere - must be in the midlands-ish as I was in Leicester at the time - but that caused no ill effects in anyone, to my knowledge.

Bleugh, sounds gross, definately with Richard there. Food intolerances are strange, i cant tolerate beef though love it. For many years I couldnt eat donuts either but thankfully that has passed and I can now!!! hahahaaha Poor Andrew, I hope he is better now.
I'm just about back to normal thanks but it was quite literally a gut-wrenching experience so I'm still a bit uncomfortable.
It normally takes a lot to upset my stomach although I try to restrict my diet to low fat. That was part of the attraction of Quorn but I was, quite simply, unable to digest it.
Having had a week off work plus a couple of days the previous week after the faint it's going to be a bit of a struggle going back to work on Monday.

Andrew, have you had a scan on your Gall Bladder? I suffered with severe pain from time to time, for years - never in the vicinity of the thing itself. I was taking this medicine, then that medicine, then another; I swallowed more gastroscopes than I care to remember . . . Then one of the GP's at my surgery developed an interest in MRI scanning and persusded his partners they should invest in one; at this time, I'd had to call the out of hours doctor, who told me to go to my surgery the next morning, and that particular GP was dealing with emergencies that day. I was scanned there and then, and told that my Gall Bladder was enlarged and full of stones. Thanks to BUPA, I was operated on within ten days, and the surgeon told me afterwards he'd pulled out a smelly bag of stones & pus!! Been 100% ever since - in terms of stomach pain that is (before Carol has a chance to say anything!!). Worth a try?
No, the only MRI scan I've had was on my brain. And yes they did find it before anyone suggests anything to the contrary!
Hopefully all the blood tests I had after my faint and also my regular cholesterol test a couple of weeks ago would have raised suspicions with the gall bladder if that was a problem.
I've never had anything like this in the past and I believe the slight discomfort I still have now is solely due to the turmoil I put my insides through last week. I am confident it will dwindle and disappear in the next few days but if it continues I will definitely bear it mind when I see the doc.

Jane has just read my post and commented that it sounded like I had an MRI scan on my belly. I can see what she means, so can I just clarify that my GP got into scanning whilst helping out at the local hospital, firstly doing scanning and then MRI scanning (which "blew him away."). He persuaded his partners, when he returned to the practice, to buy a scanner (not an MRI scanner - they cost millions!), and it arrived about 10 days before I turned up as an emergency - so I was one of the first to benefit from it. So Andrew, don't ask for an MRI scan on your belly! Apologies if, in trying to be brief, I confused you. Anyway, is the recovery progressing?
Yep, I'm doing okay thanks. I went back to work yesterday and all was fine, but I'm not doing anything too strenuous for a few days.
I must admit I wondered about the MRI scanner in the GP's surgery - as you say they are pretty expensive kit. When I had my brain scan in 2006 (I think) I was chatting to the consultant about the cost of the machinery and I think he said it would have cost something like £600 or £800 to have had the scan done privately and I don't think it took more than about 20 minutes.
