Going to Ireland

Sunday sees me and the Mini depart for the Emerald Isle. I could have taken my Rover, but that would have been too easy! Im just hoping the weather is going to be better than it has been recently as my mate Ben and I are camping.

Has anyone on here been to Ireland before, as frankly I havent done enough research, and have any tips/things that they've seen? My plan is to stick to the South East side down towards Cork, and visit Youghal where the Katheleen and May once lived. then back through the mountains to Dublin.

Im sure it will be a great trip, although a little unsure of how the giant Union Jack on the roof will go down with the locals!??!?!?!

then back to work for a week then LGT!!!!!

Sadly I've never been there, but it is on my list of places to visit before I kick the bucket.  I'll pick you brains for places to visit when I finally manage to get there have a good trip

At some time in the nearish future, we'll be taking a BOC over there to a place called Lissycasey in Co Clare. The lad who gave her to me now lives there. He doesn't know that but to see the look on his face when he sees 'Sabrina' will be priceless.

We will be child free by then. Look out world !!

Heya we went a few weeks ago! we drove to Co. Claire to Lahinch for surfing (surprise suprise) then we did a night in dublin just for me to go around the guinness factory! I am a HUGE fan of the black stuff!!! We went to many places when we were there - we went in the Transported as we had 4 surfboards - 1 for me and 3 for joel (of course he had to have a selection to choose from depending upon the waves - hmmm) we had an awesome time, i think the number plate gives it away that your not local so the union jack isnt an issue!! I think they will just enjoy seeing a mini!!! We had an AMAZING time and went to the cliff of Moher and Aran Islands saw LOADS of puffins and got very sea sick it was FAB! went to Doolin caves and saw the biggest known stalagtite on desplay in the world - ITS HUGE!! and urm.... we drunk LOADS of the black stuff! Joel was even drinking it! I LOVED IT SOOO MUCH i gave blood on tuesday and the lady said wow your blood sample is sinking fast do you eat lots of red meat, my reply was no im a vege, then it click guinness truely is good for you!!!! And on that note i may have to have a pint!

We don't travel far but we have been to Ireland. we went from Fishguard to Rosslare in our classic mini when it was Red Red Whine. 6 weeks worth of luggage, full show n shine kit and a dog!

We stayed at Bantry Bay for a week and then joined a Classic mini run Mizen to Malin. It was fun but it was gruelling. Some days 16 hours in the car and hundreds of miles as we took the scenic route. The West coast is amazing, stunning scenery, as good as Scotland and with extremes of views. And each evening PARTY................. Meal at midnight , disco at 2, raffle at 5 and meet in car park to leave at 6. And that's no joking.  I  used the excuse that I could hear Heidi our dog and had to go back to the room. The only problem we had was a low speed puncture.

After the run we stayed up North for a few days but in 2002 it would have been safe to stay there longer which was my only regret.
Excellent holiday and a must do again.
Domino not too keen on the ferry to Guernsey so that is our only obstacle. Friendly people, good scenery and oh those potholes. We followed the mini in front who was avoiding them.

It was this trip we followed a Volcano Orange mini and that steered me to choosing that colour on our respray.

From Ireland we went on to Scotland for the IMM and a tour of the Scottish Isles. That's another story but if I could get to Ireland without the sea crossing I would be back there PDQ.

i heard on the radio this week that there is a ferry going from Swansea to southern Ireland

excellent people, sounds great! i did know about the Ferry from Swansea to Cork, but its a 14 hour crossing.....

as for not being suspension friendly, i will take the chance, and just drive a bit slower. it cant be worse than the roads around North Devon can it???

I think i will have to make myself like Guinness, as not the biggest fan. Or go to Clonmel and just get wasted on Magners instead!

We went there for one of Mrs. J's "big birthdays" in 2006. Flew into Cork and hired a car.
Had a great time, as for driving though, be careful: In Co. Killarney, we were driving along a nicely tarmacced main road at around 60mph, when, entirely without notice it suddenly became an unmade road! Scary!!
Stayed in Kinsale - nicknamed "The culinary capital of Ireland" - in terms of price at restaurants, it certainly was!
I don't like Guinness this side of the water, but over there, it's wonderful.
As had been said, the people were lovely, and I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Thngs may have changed since we were there in 2002 (Bumble is my "better half") but the typical Irish road was far worse than British roads, even after a hard winter.

Some had however been widened and resurfaced to an excellent standard with huge notices to say that the work had been financed by the European Community. Nice to know our money had been put to good use......

Like Richard has said though you would be driving along quite happily and they suddenly became a typical narrow, potholed Irish road with no warning.
