NDMR Soapbox/Forum / Chit Chat / Sat Navs

I'm thinking of buying a Sat Nav really to see what speed Krakatoa is doing. We have a factory fit one in Andrew's car. Any suggestions what to go for or maybe not go for. I can read a map but I've also got to begin to teach my pupils differently for when the Driving test changes in October.

depends on what feature you want on a sat nav ;)
there's lots to choose from, like bluetooth, speed cameras, points of intrests, voice recognition, FM Traffic, etc
ive got a garmin, and its been brilliant, well built, reliable, and they have been making sat navs since they where invented :)

really depends on what you want to spend we have a snooper one which is meant for trucks it has built in bluetooth and speed (sorry safety) camara on and also monitors traffic (via subscription) so if there any hold ups you can ask to be re routed round them it wasn't cheap but very good, If you were think of having a fixed one then the Smart Nav system is very good it does all of the above but you can speak to a person at the end of a phoneline who will send you the route it will also automaticcly reroute you if there are big delays (where as the snooper one you have to do it manually)
Hope this helps

I have a Tom tom and Michelle has a Garmin - we are both quite happy with them (Michelle likes the Garmin as she can use it on her bike) and I admit I'm on my 2nd Tom tom (I lost the first - don't ask) To be honest they all lie at times and when we do LeJog I use atlas, Terry's written instructions, my own print out as well as Tom tom ;D
PS the speedo came in very useful when Jock's packed up

We bought a Garmin 1490T. We could have got it £1 cheaper on line but bought it in Guernsey and used it. It tried to take us down some very narrow island lanes but common sense prevailed. We had the choice of Emily or Daniel but found Emily clearer.
It made us much more aware of our speed too. Andrew's speedo is quite small to read.
On our way home last night, we had both sat navs on with radio traffic updates but no one told us the A31 was closed from 8pm. Each tried to take us different ways. At least we'll know what speed Krakatoa is doing.

I've downloaded co pilot onto my iphone, I've tried it out briefly and it works well, better than the navman I have, also pops up with speed limits, speed cameras, traffic alerts and weather. Plus you can fi d out how much petrol is, the nearest pub (important), best thing is it was £30 and updates for free!

Have to say that I have the truck mate snooper too, sadly I havent been brave enough to try and down load the data to get the speed camera alerts, hense got my first speeding penalty a few weeks back, 49 on an A road, damn those mobile vans..... pooo going to take a speed awareness course to not get the 3 points, I hope. :P

When I teach mine speed limits they're always surprised a car can do 60 but a truck only 40. I managed John Lewis Kingston distribution and did not realise that. Hard luck, an unlucky one-off. Enjoy your course, you'll raise a few eyebrows when you tell them what you were driving!

Course all booked up, 21st Aug. very wary everytime I see a speedsafety camera sign now though, I could so easily lose my license in one day doing this job!! No wonder no one wants to take this profession on now, what with the VOSA red tape, the stupid speeds etc that we have to adhere to..... Still love it though, got introduced to spaghetti junction on friday! ARRRRGGGGGGH!!!! Couldnt have done it without satnav Jane. :D
