A mini day out for the whole family!
The Dartington Crystal Mini Show in Aid of the Children’s Hospice South West Precious Lives appeal is on this Sunday July 25th.
Now in its 3rd year and attracting more and more minis both new & classic the day offers fun for mini enthusiasts and families who are looking for a fun day out alike.
Unlike most shows the judging of the minis is done by the mini owners who get voting slips when they arrive. There are the normal classes plus a chance for the Children to pick their favourite Mini. There is also an “I don’t think this mini will win any prizes today “prize!
Here Terry Baker, event organiser and long-term supporter of Children’s Hospice South West tells us more:
“Although the show is a fun show there is strong competition among the Mini Owners to win one of the fantastic Ice-Berg trophies donated by Dartington Crystal! It’s a great day for the whole family, whist the Mini Owners are picking the winners, children will be kept amused with a line up of games where everyone is a winner. There is also face painting and a Mini Owners fun dog show plus lots of other things going on.”
“Because of the generosity of Dartington Crystal and the North Devon Mini Register we can say that every penny raised on the day will be going to the Children’s Hospice South West”
The North Devon Mini Register has supported Children’s Hospice South West for over 15 years, raising thousands of pounds in the process. Emma Puckey, Head of Fundraising at Little Bridge House said:
“To say that we are proud to have the support of these intrepid little cars and their dedicated owners would not even come close to expressing our gratitude. Terry & Linda – indeed, the whole crew of the North Devon Mini Register - have become such an important part of our family. They may be small cars, but their hearts are massive. We hope this static mini show will prove popular with local families and wish all the mini owners good luck in the judging!”
The show is on hard standing but there is a grass area if anyone wants to bring a picnic.
The show is not restricted to Mini Owners and members of the public are more than welcome to come along and bring the children and join in the fun and see the Minis.
Entrance to the show for the Mini Owners is £3-00 for a car and driver or £5-00 if there is more than just the driver inside.
Entrance to the show for the public is a small donation to the CHSW.
The show starts at 10-30am and finishes at 3-00pm.

I am sure half an hour will not make that much difference so 8-00am.
Does anyone fancy being a DJ but you must have your own music, we have a twin cd player and mixer that works, all we need is the music and someone to use it.

Picked up the trophies this afternoon, we may have a small show but the trophies are so fantastic better than a lot of bigger shows and if we only have 10 minis turn up we will all get one.

Mmm. I remember them from last year.
I must have eaten more cakes in 2 weeks on holiday than in the previous 2 years put together. But my holiday isn't over until my alarm goes off at 5.00am on Monday so I'm sure we will buy some on Sunday.

Ok, I won't tell him if you don't.

Fingers crossed I will get the job I have applied for and I can get my self back on track! Hope you all have a fabulous time and I will try and join you next year!

Dartington Crystal will never be a fantastic mini show nor will it ever be up there in the top ten of mini show but
Oh it's was such a perfect day
I'm glad I spent it with you.
What a nice way to spend a sunday and a few mini owners went away with some fantastic trophies and on top of that you raised nearly £600 for the Children's Hospice.

We left the show at 4 and was home by 8.30 thanks to our new sat nav but it was not all smooth going as we had a domestic over it. I'll let Andrew tell you why later. We could have done with a few more dogs at the Dog Show but every one that entered got a rosette (except Domino). Thanks to Mike and Emma for judging. I think you quite enjoyed yourselves.......

We would have have been back earlier but we stopped for about an hour to get the boys a KFC, that & I overshot the turning off the A34 onto the Oxford ringroad & ended up having to go through the centre of Oxford(whistle)

We left the show at 4 and was home by 8.30 thanks to our new sat nav but it was not all smooth going as we had a domestic over it. I'll let Andrew tell you why later.
The satnav has a delay icon which comes up on the screen with the length of delay. But if Emily (the lady inside) works out that it would be quicker to go another way the icon disappears and she simply gives you instructions to go another way. That can be a bit disconcerting when she tells you to go across the Severn Bridge instead of turning down the M5 to Devon or to go round the back of Stonehenge to avoid the 5 minute queue on the A303.
On our way home up the M3 she began to tell us to turn off at junction 5 instead of continuing all the way to the M25. I then started to press icons to find out what the delay was and what way Emily wanted to take us. She was predicting a 40 minute delay on a 20 mile section of M3 and instead wanted to take us cross-country to join the A3. The benefit of this way is that we wouldn't need to touch the M25. To say that Rita way unhappy at my icon-pushing while drivng on the motorway is a big understatement.
We agreed to give Emily the benefit of the doubt but at the next roundabout I misinterpreted the icon and found myself in the wrong lane. I allowed myself to be distracted by this and was too busy moaning about the misleading icon to notice a car coming around the roundabout towards us so wasn't going to stop. Rita warned me that the car was there and I decided to accelerate onto the roundabout in front of it rather than stop. Once again Rita was very unimpressed.
I learnt an important lesson here - satnavs can be very useful but can also be a big and dangerous distraction. I also learnt a new route - a nice peaceful 30 minute drive instead of 27 miles on the M3 and M25 with an extra 40 minute delay. I'm tempted to use that route again even when the traffic isn't so heavy. And only press those extra icons when the car is stationary.
